I was hoping to post one of the new Ferrari 458 Spider reviews that cropped up on YouTube, but they were all kind of disappointing. None of them were as good as Vicki Butler-Henderson’s review of the car from last year. She really nails what makes the Spider special over the 458 Italia. The car is so good she almost cries.
Between his role as “European Correspondent” for Car and Driver and this review for evo, Jethro Bovingdon is quickly becoming one of my favorite car reviewers. He takes Ferrari’s newest front engine V12 monster for a spin around Fiorana test track and then on Italy’s mountain roads. Jethro also brings along a 599 GTO as a benchmark comparison for the new car.
As a celebration of the 25th of the Ferrari F40, owners in the UK made an attempt at the world record for largest parade of F40’s in the world. This is video of 62 F40’s on Silverstone Circuit. If you don’t know what makes this car special, have Chris Harris explain it to you.
Here’s another creeper video from the Ferrari test track, Fiorano Circuit, near Maranello. This time it’s of some of Ferrari’s old F1 cars getting some exercise. The uploader thinks that it’s Ferrari customer cars. The first and third cars sound like V12’s and the second one sounds like a Lexus LF-A, so it’s probably a V10.
I’ve rebuilt a couple of engines during my time as a car guy and I have to say that I find it really fun. It’s probably because I can be a very details oriented person. Everything is precision machined, all the parts are clean and have a designated place to go and every fastener is perfectly matched for its job and torque spec. It’s an immensely complex piece of machinery that you get to put together from the ground up. That’s why I like posting these “engine porn” videos. The How It’s Made show got access to the Ferrari factory in Maranello to bring us this footage their high performance engines being produced. My favorite part is at the beginning where they sand cast the heads. It’s not a process you get to see very often even though pretty much everybody uses aluminum heads made like this.
