Turbo Ferrari California Test Mule

This video from one of the European race car sound video guys hit YouTube this past weekend. It was taken at Ferrari’s private test track, Fiorano Circuit, near the Ferrari factory in Maranello. Here’s a picture of the track:

It looks like the videographer was hiding out in the cluster of trees above the center of the picture. His or her hard work brought us some footage of a Ferrari California test mule with what is most likely a turbo V6 that is being developed for Maserati.

Chances are Ferrari is making a turbocharged and supercharged V6’s see which one they like better. That’s what GM did for the Corvette ZR-1. They went with the supercharger after their turbo car caught on fire and burned to the ground at their proving in Milford, Michigan. Lets hope this Ferrari doesn’t share the same fate.

Cult of the Turbo – Chris Harris

I came across this older Chris Harris video from back when he was still with Evo magazine. I think it came out last year when Porsche had just unveiled the 911 GT2 RS. Chris takes it and compares it with some other turbo cars from different time periods and build philosophies. It’s probably the only time you’ll see the GT2 RS parked next to a Noble M600, Jaguar XJ220 and a Ferrari F40. I’ll admit the video isn’t particularly informative, but it is fun to watch.

Ferrari FXX and 599XX Engine Notes

This is footage from a recent Ferrari client car track day at Monza. The client car program is where select Ferrari owners purchase race cars based on production cars that Ferrari keeps and maintains. Track days such as this one are the only time these cars are driven. There were a handful of  the Enzo based FXX’s present. The FXX has a 6.0 liter V12 that makes 800 horsepower at an astronomical 8500 rpm. Very few engines have the kind of response like the one in the FXX and most of those are rotaries. It almost sounds like engine note can’t keep up how fast it revs. All of the downshifts fire off like lightning and the throttle blips sound like they would continue to rev forever if the gear engagement didn’t stop it.

The 599XX has a different 6.0 liter V12. It’s far less high strung making “only” 740 hp. These cars are based off of the 599 GTO and have an active rear wing as part of the Evolution aero package.

Motor Trend Epic Drives: Corvette ZR-1

Motor Trend’s editor in chief, Angus Mackenzie, takes professional race driver Justin Bell on a road trip through Europe in the Corvette ZR-1. They of course hit the Autobahn and the Stelvio Pass to see what it can do. As an added bonus, Mackenzie and Bell pick up a Ferrari 458 Italia from the Ferrari factory in Maranello to do some follow the leader. It’s a nice video for showing what the essence of the cars are like beyond the dry performance stats.
