The World’s Fastest Hybrid Part 2

Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago is back with the second installment of his quest to set the record for the fastest production hybrid at the Bonneville Salt Flats. In part 1 the guys took the first turbo hybrid for sale in the US, the Volkswagen Jetta hybrid, and prepped it for the Bonneville with racing and safety equipment. The 1.4 liter turbo engine and electric motor were tuned for a combined output of 300 horsepower at 30 pounds of boost. At the time, the Jetta broke the existing record but was ineligible due to the fact that it hadn’t hit production yet. This time around the car was legal and the team had made some tweaks including a lower ride height and smaller wheels to get even more top speed out of it. Check out the video to see how if they were able to officially get the speed record.

Twin Turbo Dodge Daytona Land Speed Racer

This 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona is owned by Lee Sicilio and it will be running in Bonneville this August. It’s running a twin turbo 496 cubic inch Hemi built by Ray Barton and tuned by Scott Clark. The dyno run gets cut short, but you can tell this car is going to be a beast. They’re shooting to break 300 mph and Bangshift estimates the final power numbers to be in the 2000-2500 horsepower range.

The Institution of the Bonneville Salt Flats by Motor Trend

Motor Trend just posted this great video about the Bonneville Salt Flats. What makes it interesting is that they give you a picture of the culture built by the racers that convene there every year. What they do is not racing in the traditional sense. The competition is not a cutthroat head to head to race. It’s more accurate to think of it as a competition of the people against the salt and the clock. You get a really good feel for the mentality of the racers from the interviews in the video.
